Imphal, August 25 2011:
The 7th Students Convention 2011 organised by Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) got underway at the multi-purpose hall of Manipur College with various speakers focusing on the prevailing situation in the State in the aftermath of the ongoing bandh and general strike.
The Convention will conclude tomorrow.
In his address, former MSF president T Parijat expressed serious concern that the agitation by different organisations on the issue of upgrading Sadar Hills into a revenue district is resulting in the suffering of the common public.
He said taking advantage of disruption caused to transportation of essential commodities traders, who have had sufficient stock at their godowns are selling goods at exorbitant rates.
Prices of even locally grown vegetables have gone up thereby causing immense hardships to the general public, especially the daily wage earners, Parijat noted with remorse and desired that rather than add to the people's woes there should be concerted effort from all concerned to mitigate inconveniences faced by the people.
Social activist Dr Dhanabir Laishram, who also spoke at the occasion, highlighted that MSF was actually founded by pioneer figure Hijam Irabot.
Further recounting that the MSF founded by Hijam Irabot ceased to function before its eventual revival in the late 90s, he suggested that MSF leaders work with dedication to mould the future generation.
Apart from former presidents of the student organisation, including Md Atabuddin and Laishram Ibomcha, representatives of various civil society organisations were also present on the first day of the Convention.
