Imphal, July 25 2013:
Muslim Council Manipur (MCM) has opposed the Government's move to set up a branch office of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) at Mantripukhri.
The Council has urged the Government to look for another locality for the said purpose in view of the presence of mosques and temples at the area where the Government is planning to acquire land.
In a press conference held at Grand Holy Mosque, Golapati, MCM General Secretary Haji Arafat said, it is unfortunate that the Government is planning the eviction at Mantripukhri where people of different communities have been residing since past two centuries.
People of the locality were surprised with the sudden land survey conducted by an official team led by Imphal East DC in the morning of July 22 last, Arafat said.
It was obvious to get enraged as no information was given to the residents prior to the survey,
he added.
He also demanded for release of around 100 people including students who were arrested by police on the said day.
Urging the Government to spell out the required area of land to the residents for the construction of RBI branch, Arafat added that they are ready to suggest a suitable place for the said purpose.
Arafat said that MCM also condemns eviction of residents at Kabo Leikai for the construction of a 5-Star hotel and Government's plan to take over Royal Palace.
