Imphal, November 22 2012:
Insisting that barbers plying their trades in the State stick to the officially agreed rate for hair cutting and related services, All Manipur Students' Union said it would enforce shutdown of barber shops in case there is continued defiance.
Speaking to newspersons at the DMC campus head office of the students' body today, AMSU general secretary N Depanjit noted that on October 19, 2010 representatives of Manipur Barbers' Association and Deputy Labour Commissioner NS Gokulmani reached an agreement on rates of hair-cutting, massage, shaving etc.
According to the agreement, rate of hair cutting was fixed at Rs 20, special shaving Rs 20, hair-dyeing Rs 50, head massage Rs 20, full-body massage Rs 40, full fair-shaving Rs 20, hair-wash with shampoo Rs 15 and hair-setting Rs 15, said Depanjit.
Contrary to the said agreement, barbers recently started charging Rs 30 for hair-cutting and subsequent increase for other services, said the student activist who demanded that the previously agreed rate should be levied from the customers.
Setting November 25 as the deadline for the barbers to stick to the previous rate, Depanjit said AMSU volunteers would launch special drive to check whether the barbers are complying with the officially fixed rates.
In case any barber shop of found violating the said agreement AMSU would be compelled to shut down the shop, he cautioned while adding that student customers who produce identity cards should be charged Rs 10 for a hair-cut.
AMSU vice president Abdul Haque was also present during the media briefing.
