Imphal, February 21 2017:
Categorically stating that he would not be cowed down by threats and violence, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has appealed to all concerned to give up violence and all acts of cowardice.
Even though State security forces who were on duty in connection with the Deputy Chief Minister's visit to his native village Gaidimjang were attacked four times by militants today, Gaikhangam did not turn back but went to his home and hoisted the Congress party's flag.
Speaking at an election rally held at Gaidimjang community hall, Gaikhangam who is contesting in Nungba AC recalled that similar acts of violence and even killings were committed during the previous election too but the people gave a befitting reply to all those people who abhorred communal harmony, development and peace.
He then called upon all concerned to come to the right path and fight the election fair and square if they want to get elected.
Today's multiple attacks manifested disappointment on the part of the assailants whether they were ZUF or NSCN-IM.
The attacks were carried out deliberately as they came to know that Congress party is supported by a vast majority of people, he claimed.
"We are not enraged by such attacks.
Rather we are praying they realise that such violent activities are wrong and they may ultimately come to the path of peace", Gaikhangam stated.
NPF which was set up at the behest of NSCN-IM has been openly challenging the integrity and territorial boundary of Manipur.
On the other hand, BJP has been using many militant groups as mercenaries in the name of nationalism.
This was testified by the campaign of threatening people not to vote for non-BJP candidates, Gaikhangam asserted who is also in charge of Home Department.
Listing a number of projects taken up and implemented by the Congress Government during the past 15 years, Gaikhangam stated that the Congress Government has been working to bring uniform development across the hills and valley of the State.
He then conveyed gratitude to the huge gathering who defied the multiple armed attacks.
ADC Members Zino Kamei, Alek Thoithak, RP Merijin, Khiangpou and Members of Tamenglong DCC and Nungba BCC were also seated on the dais.
