A National theatre festival will be held in Imphal in the last week of February or first week of March next year, said National School of Drama, New Delhi Chairman Ratan Thiyam.
He was speaking at the closing function of a one-month residential theatre workshop, jointly organised by Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata and Chorus Repertory Theatre, Imphal at Chorus Repertory Theatre, Uripok-Kangchup road today.
Secretary (Art and Culture) K Radhakumar and Theatre Critic Budha Chingtham graced the closing function as chief guest and president respectively.
In his speech, K Radhakumar dwelt at length on the relation between theatre and society and diminishing of humorous characteristics in theatre.
He said that the young generation must put in effort to sustain the position presently held by Manipuri theatre at the International level.
Budha Chingtham while speaking at the function said that there is need to study more on serious theatre and production of quality plays and theatre professionals.
He also stressed on the need to put in collective efforts to bring a new era in Manipuri theatre by researching more on amateur theatre and past artistes, directors and playwrights.
Later, participants of the workshop presented dance theatre performance 'We Are One' and mime performance 'Let Me Live' .
