East Zone VCs' Meet starts at MU

The two-day East Zone Vice Chancellors'Meet 2017 organised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) began today at the Court Hall of the VC Secretariat, Manipur University.
In the opening session, Prof PB Sharma, president, AIU shared attended as the chief guest, Prof Adya Prasad Pandey, Vice-Chancellor, MU as the president, and Prof Furqan Qamar, secretary general, AIU, Prof SN Puri, former VC, CAU and former president, AIU, and Prof Arun Kumar, conference coordinator and dean, environmental sciences, MU as the guests of honour.
The main role of a university is to satisfy the local needs of a place in a scientific manner, said Prof PB Sharma in his speech at the meet held under the theme of "Future Universities : Challenges and Opportunities for Relevance and Excellence" .
He added that the shortcomings of such a place should be mended from a National and global perspective.
In such a setting, a university needs to contribute starting from the State and regional level up to that of the Nation and also in moving India forward, he said.
Efforts are now being put in to make a new India and universities should play a crucial part in it.
The world is now looking at India but unfortunately, a lot needs to be done in the education system and much improvement from the present condition, Prof PB Sharma said.
In India, the higher education sector is the least developed and it is inevitable for those in the universities to come together, he mentioned.
He added it is with such an objective that the AIU is calling the VCs together for the meet and to be more innovative to make a better India.
In his speech, Prof Adya Prasad Pandey remarked that the campus of Manipur University is located at the old capital of Manipur and the birthplace of' world-renowned Ras Leela.
Like the heritage of the MU, the VC said, the day's meet was historical and one of the first of its kind.
Prof Furqan Qamar elaborated on the background and objectives of the AIU.
He informed, around 40 VCs are taking part in the meet.
As part of the meet, a newsletter of the AIU was released by the presidium members.
The VCs also discussed on topics including "Scenarios of future universities" and "Role of higher education in transforming North East India".
They will further deliberate on the topic of "The role of higher education in catalysing Act East Policy" tomorrow.
