Imphal, September 18 2015 :
Alleging that some staff of Weight and Measures Department have been demanding money from drivers of loaded trucks who are moving with security escorts at Barak Bridge on the way from Jiribam to Imphal, the Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association (MTOWA) has called for an immediate halt to the unethical practice of demanding money and all other forms of harassment meted out to truck drivers.
Alleging that some staff of Weight and Measures Department have been taking money from drivers in the name of checking weights, MTOWA president H Ranjit sought immediate intervention of the authority concerned.
He also appealed to all drivers and truck owners not to transport loads heavier than 24/25 tonnes.
During a meeting at the office chamber of the Additional Chief Secretary (Works) on September 4, BRO officials assured that the runner of Barak Bridge would be replaced by wooden planks within one month, Ranjit pointed out.
He then appealed to all truck drivers and owners not to load their vehicles with goods heavier than 24/25 tonnes until the runner is replaced with wooden planks or till October 3 .
If Barak Bridge becomes non-operational due to loading vehicles with additional tonnes, then BRO may put the blame on transporters, he added.
