Imphal, July 18 2022:
Makhuam resident social worker Majabung Gangmei has blamed recklessness of Indian Railways for the Makhuam village landslide that claimed lives of several people.
Addressing a press meet at Makhuam village in Noney district on Monday, Majabung Gangmei recalled that Geological Survey of India had carried out detailed survey of the area in 2013 before Indian Railway initiated work for laying the
railway lines.
Consequently, the body also cited the Marangching railway project as 'less feasible' when the Indian Railways initiated the project in 2017 .
Moreover, one day ahead of the fateful incident, a team of Geological Survey of India visited the area and advised them to shift from the location soon.
However, the authority of Indian Railways did not pay heed to the warning, which resulted in the loss of life, he said, while adding that Indian Railways should be held responsible for the tragedy and loss of lives.
Mention may be made that 79 people including five villagers went missing in the massive landslide that occurred on the intervening night of June 29 and 30 .
Five of them are still missing.
