HC orders Rs 10 lakh compensation

Imphal, January 17 2020:
The High Court of Manipur has directed the Power Department to pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of a three-year old boy who had been electrocuted.
Then three-year old P Somirin was reading in KG-I at a Primary School of his native village, Kangkhui Khunou.
There is a high-voltage power transformer without any fence about just 15 feet away from the Primary School.
Amidst repeated appeals of the Kangkhui Khunou Village Authority to the concerned authorities to fence off the power transformer as it posed serious risk to both human beings and cattle, P Somirin got electrocuted by the same transformer on August 24, 2016.Aggrieved by the careless attitude of the officers and staff of Power Department and their failure to adhere to safety norms, P Dearson, father of late P Somirin, filed a petition at the High Court of Manipur praying for compensation.
After hearing the petition, the High Court, on January 6, ordered the Managing Directors of Manipur State Power Company Limited (MSPCL) and the Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL) to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the bereaved father.
Advocate Tungrei Ngakang represented the petitioner in the particular case.
