Imphal, January 17 2014 :
The JAC constituted against the killing of Mema Bibi has strongly denounced the act of Irilbung PS personnel including the OC for allegedly baton-charging the women who demanded the arrest of the culprits involved in the killing.
Speaking to reporters today at Manipur Press Club, the JAC convenor, Wahidur Rehman said that although the prime accused in the killing of Mema BibiNur Khan alias Khan, S/o Abdul Naziz of Kyamgei Muslim Awang Leikai, has been arrested by the police, no further arrest has been made even if the JAC strongly put forward two other suspects in the case.
Instead of arresting them and initiating their trial, the police said that evidence of the crime was destroyed when the mob burned down the house of the accused, he said.
The convenor said that no items were left inside the house when the mob burned down the house while also alleging the police of shielding the culprits.
With all the grievances the JAC members staged a democratic agitation demanding the arrest of all suspects when the arrested man was produced before the CJM yesterday.
It was then the OC of Irilbung PS along with male personnel baton-charged the agitating women, he alleged.
Three of the womenThambal Bibi (41), Ani Rokia (21) D/o the deceased Mema Bibi and Nasifa (18) all from Kyamgei Muslim Awang Leikai, were injured in the police action, the JAC convenor said.
All of them were present during the press meet.
Wahidur Rehman further expressed strong disapproval of the alleged destruction of evidences and the police action against women protesters.
