Transgender board demanded in Manipur

Solidarity and Action Against the HIV Infection in India (SAATHII) and All Manipur Nupi Manbi Association (AMaNA) on Wednesday urged the Government to form transgender board in the State.
During the media interaction programme on implementation of Supreme Court NALSA Judgment jointly organised by SATHII and AMaNA held at Manipur Press Club, AMaNA Secretary Santa Thingjam said that Supreme Court of India had delivered a landmark NALSA Judgment on April 15, 2014 to recognize the need for granting full citizenship regardless of gender assigned at birth, protecting rights and making provision of entitlements for transgender individuals.
And following the judgment the Centre and State Governments were directed by the Apex court to implement recommendations within six month from October last.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE), Government of India constituted an Expert Committee to make an in-depth study of the problems being faced by the transgender community.
The Government of India has sent letters to all State Government and proposing five schemes Financial support of Rs 1000 for parents of transgender children, monthly scholarship for students in Classes VII to X, Monthly scholarship to pursue higher studies in India, scheme to train transgender in developing their vocational skill and monthly pension of Rs 1000 to TG after the age of 40 and till they reach 60 .
Santa urged the Government to form Transgender Board in the State for smooth implementation of such schemes.
But States like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Odissa have already formed board and started implementing schemes.
Santa further alleged that Manipur Government is not interested to form the board.
While SAATHII Senior Programme Manager Randhoni Lairikyemba, appealed to the civil society organization and community-based initiatives in Manipur will continue to work protecting rights of transgender individuals.
