Imphal, December 14 2024:
The Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee (DMCC), Women's and Youth wings have strongly condemned the unjust detention of Thokchom Sujata by Delhi Police, preventing her from participating in the Nupi Lan observance at Jantar Mantar on December 12 .
Thokchom Sujata is the convenor of Imagi Meira.
She was allegedly detained by Delhi Police at her place of stay.
She traveled to Delhi specifically to attend the Nupi Lan observance event at Jantar Mantar, organized by DMCC Women's and Youth wing, said a statement issued by Naorem Lilina, Media Coordinator, DMCC.
DMCC claimed that the Delhi police denied her from attending the event citing "unsubstantiated input that she planned to protest nude".
Maintaining that this decision raises concerns about the police's handling of peaceful assemblies and the dissemination of misinformation, DMCC noted that Th Sujata's intention was not to incite violence or engage in any unlawful activities.
Notably, the event aimed to honor the brave women who fought against British colonial oppression, economic exploitation and injustice and raise awareness about the ongoing atrocities and amplify the voices of victims and their families affected by the Jiribam massacre.
Condemning the actions of the law enforcement agencies, DMCC maintained that this incident raises concerns about the freedom of speech and assembly, as well as the treatment of social activists by the police.
It may be noted that observance of Nupi Lan Day cum protest demonstration against Jiribam massacre and the missing case of Laishram Kamalbabu was held at Jantar Mantar yesterday.
