Imphal, August 12 2024:
Explaining their decision to stay away from the last sitting of the sixth session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, Opposition Congress party has blamed the Speaker.
Notably, the five Congress MLAs staged a walkout from the State Assembly on Friday.
Briefing media persons at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here this afternoon, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that they have been repeatedly proposing a thorough discussion in the State Assembly on the core issues of the 15 months old crisis.
In addition to verbal proposals, Th Lokeshwar submitted a notice of motion to the Speaker seeking a decision of the State Assembly for a joint meeting between the MLAs of the State and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in order to explore a solution to the Manipur crisis.
But the Speaker rejected the notice without giving any reason, Meghachandra said.
It was this nonchalant attitude of the Speaker which compelled the State Assembly to stay away from the House session, he said.
Repeated approaches by the State Government to hold a meeting with the Prime Minister on the Manipur crisis ended in failure.
Opposition parties too sought an appointment with the Prime Minister but the PMO did not give them even a single appointment, he decried.
The double-engine Government has been paying no heed to the repeated appeals of the Congress party for the State Government and the Central Government to sit together and chart a concrete roadmap to bring an end to the Manipur crisis.
Categorically saying that every matter/proposal raised by the Congress party should not be seen as political moves, Meghachandra appealed to all concerned not to portray the party in the wrong light.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the Congress party submitted a written statement to the Speaker today regarding the Congress legislators' protest against the Speaker's refusal to entertain their opinions.
On the other hand, Works Minister K Govindas stated during zero hour in the State Assembly today that the Congress party is accustomed to staging walkouts without any valid reason.
Chief Minister N Biren has already stated that the work of seeking an appointment with the Prime Minister would be handled by the Chief Minister's office with involvement of all the MLAs, Govindas said.
Speaker Th Satyabrata converted the observation made by Govindas during zero hour into a statement.
On different charges made by the Opposition parties against the Modi Government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a detailed reply but no Opposition MPs were present in the Parliament when Modi gave his reply, Govindas said.
Likewise, Congress MLAs made several charges against the State Government and walked out of the House, he said.
