World Suicide Prevention Day observed

As per CID Crime Branch records, 24 people committed suicide in Manipur in 2023 while 1,70,924 people committed suicide across India in 2022, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
This was stated by Health Services Director Dr O Sanahabi during a World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 observation at Hotel Imphal, North AOC.
Dr Sanahanbi said that World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10 every year starting from 2003.According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), seven lakh people commit suicide every year.
Almost 77 per cent of the suicide victims belong to low income groups.
One major factor for committing suicides is depression.
So timely and proper treatment of depression is very important, Dr Sanahanbi said.
Many social, familial, money and relationship factors are also responsible for or contribute to cases of suicide, she said.
Suicides can be prevented if all these factors are taken into account and addressed satisfactorily, Dr Sanahanbi added.
She pointed out that the present turmoil in Manipur can also contribute to cases of suicide.
Special Secretary (Health & Family Welfare) Hungyo Worsang, Health and Family Welfare Director Dr O Sanahabi, Additional Director Chanbo Gonmei and NHM Manipur State Mission Director Dr M Dinesh attended the observation as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Prizes were also distributed to winners of a short play competition held on the theme 'suicide prevention' .
This year's theme for the World Suicide Prevention Day is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" .
