Fish Farmers' Day held

Govt.of Manipur has on Thursday organised the 14th Fish Farmers' Day 2014 at Directorate of Fisheries Lamphelpat.
During the function, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Md Abdul Nasir attended as chief guest and the Commissioner of the Fisheries Y Jugindro Singh presided over the Fish Farmers' Day.
While giving the key note address of the programme, the Director of Fisheries K Saratkumar Singh expressed that the main theme for organising Fish Farmers' Day is to encourage the activity of fish farmers.
The Commissioner also mentioned that the fish production in Manipur has been strikingly decreased owing to shallowness of the Rivers of the State thereby causing acute shortage of fish and this shortage of fish has been compensated with the products of the Fish Farmers of Manipur.
Narrating the history of artificial fish eggs, Saratkumar told that artificial production fish eggs could not be possible in post 1959 India and further informed that Heralal Choudhury had successfully developed artificial production of fish eggs of Rou and Mirgal in 1959 and the artificial production of fish eggs was started in Manipur in 1967-68 .
He also mentioned of the cage-culture fish farming being experimented in the Loktak Lake and further expressed the fishes could be big enough for marketing in the coming Ningol Chak-kouba.
As part of the of the programme, the prizes for the Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition which was held on April 11, 2013 at Hapta Kangjeibung were also distributed to the respective prize winners.
The first, second and third prizes of the completion were awarded to Ningthoujam Kumar Singh of Thanga Chingmei, Salam Daballo Singh of Nongmaikhong and Ngulkhohao of Ukhril District.
It is worthy to mention that Kumar, Daballo and Ngulkhohao produced 13200, 12000 and 5040 kilograms of fishes in the said competition and the winners got Rs 60000, 40000 and 30000 respectively along with certificate of honour.
The prize for Highest Indigenous Fish Producer was conferred to Khangembam Tiken Meitei of Kumbi for producing 1300 kilograms of indigenous fish and he received a sum of Rs 15000 along with certificate of honour.
The inceptive prize presented to DFO/CEO of the hill and valley were CEO Bishnupur M Lokendro Singh for valley and DFO Ukhrul L Kumar Singh for hill for producing 23400 and 5340 kilograms of fish respectively.
The prize carries a sum of Rs 10000 each along with certificate of honour.
