Imphal, September 08 2024:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has written to Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu to regulate flight ticket prices in view of all the trouble Manipur has been going through.
WMC, in the letter to the Union Minister, said that the two National Highways (NH-2 and NH-37) which connect Manipur with the rest of the country are still unsafe for the Meeteis to take due to the ongoing tension and as such they rely only on air travel.
"The Imphal valley is geographically enclosed by two critical routes : National Highway 2 connecting Na-galand through Kang-pokpi and NH-37 connecting Assam through Tamenglong.
Unfortunately these highways have become restricted and unsafe for the Meetei community due to the ongoing tension, compelling citizens to rely heavily on air travel via Imphal Airport," the letter read.
Regrettably, air ticket prices from Imphal to nearby cities like Dimapur, Guwahati and Silchar have seen a significant rise, the WMC said and added that the people are left with no other option than to endure the high travel cost or risk their safety.
The Council appealed to the Civil Aviation Minister to regulate the air ticket prices for flights connecting Imphal with Dimapur, Guwahati and Silchar by capping the prices, offering subsidies and to increase the frequency of flights.
