Imphal, August 06 2024:
Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has urged the Centre to put in strong security measures on National Highways connecting Manipur for unhindered and safe transport of goods and people.
The two roads, the National Highway-2 (Imphal- Dimapur) and National Highway-37 (Imphal-Jiribam) are lifelines of the people of Manipur, and adequate security measures must be put in place to secure these Highways, the MP said in the Parliament.
Notably, transport of goods and people on NH-2 and NH-37 are often disrupted by bandhs and threats posed by armed groups, who collect illegal taxes from vehicles.
Amid the unrest between communities in Manipur since May 3, 2023, the transport of goods on NH-37 has been choked by bad road conditions and threats posed by armed militants.
In April this year, armed militants opened fire on trucks carrying petroleum products on NH-37.Several trucks were damaged and a driver was hurt in the attack.
In the Parliament, MP Leishemba Sanajaoba said frequent bandhs and blockades have been hindering transport of all goods including essential items into the State.
While bandhs and blockades hinder flow of tourists into the State, adversely affect economy and development, the people of Manipur often face shortage of essential goods, food and medicines, he said.
Strong security measures must be put in place to ensure free, safe and secure transport of goods on the National Highways, MP Leishemba Sanajaoba said, urging the Government.
