Thoubal, June 04 2020:
Convenor of the Voluntary Network for a Green Earth, Khangabok Laishram Deban has appealed to the State Government to introduce a Bill/law to protect plants and trees grown in non-forest areas.
Speaking to media persons during a press meet held at Khangabok Part (ii) Ikop Ningthou Laibung, today, environmentalist L Deban, who is an Associate Professor at GP Women College, stated that as people often destroyed plants and trees grown in non-forest lands, there is no point in planting lakh and lakh of saplings each year on Ban Mahotsav or World Environment Day if there is no provision to protect it (the saplings).
Saying that states such as Delhi, Kerela and Tripura have a legal system to protect such plants or trees but the same is yet to be introduced in Manipur, he asked the State Government if Green Manipur Mission will bear fruits without a legal framework to back the mission.
If more importance is not given to protection and conservation of the environment, today, the National Forest Policy of 1988 which was launched to ensure environmental stability and maintenance of ecological balance will not yield the desired results, he cautioned.
It may be mentioned that Voluntary Network for a Green Earth, Khangabok under the supervision of Laishram Deban had planted over 6,000 saplings till date.
