Heavy rain washes away bridge

Flash floods due to incessant rainfall for the past few days in the State have affected several houses in and around Pallel, Thoubal and Chandel districts Headquarters.
Similarly, large tracts of land at Sugnu, Nungu, Tangjeng and Serou have been submerged.
The swirling flood water washed away the bridge built over Etok canal at Yairipok Chandrakhong under Heirok Assembly Constituency today.
The bridge connects Chandrakhong Fangjakhong with other parts of Yairipok.
Incidentally the bridge was inaugurated by Chief Minister O Ibobi in 2007 .
At Serou, the longest bridge over Chakpi river, has been over flooded while 75 percent of Serou have been inundated.
With Sekmai river over flowing, several houses and agricultural lands located at Pallel in Thoubal district and some adjoining villages of Chandel district have been submerged.

Houses and properties including livestock as well as agricultural crops were also destroyed.
Local people have prohibited vehicular movement along Pallel's old bridge and have temporarily closed the old bridge.
Most of the villagers of Island, Theimungkong, Sainem villages in Chandel district, have shifted to safer places after their houses were half-submerged in water.
Volunteers of Aimol Student's Union, Manipur led by its president also extended assistance in shifting the household articles of Island villagers.
Moreover, there is also a report of flash flood in Chandel district headquarters after Chakpi river started to overflow.
Besides destroying several houses, large tracts of agricultural lands in the district headquarters have been submerged.
Meanwhile, a team of newly elected Chandel ADC members and Naga People's Front (NPF), Chandel Division also visited the flood affected villages near Pallel and interacted with the villagers this morning.
Briefing media persons, Chandel ADC member Mathew Maring assured of providing relief material and appealed to the adjoining villages to extend assistance to the flood affected villagers.
He further urged the State Government to provide relief to the affected villagers.
Ts Kanlun Anal, member, 13-Vomku DCC and John Molarsing, president, NPF Chandel Division were also part of the inspection team.
Rural Education and Action for Change-Manipur (REACH-M) also provided relief materials to the villagers of Island.
In the meantime, various places in Keirak and Kakching bazar have been flooded due to the overflowing water of Sekmai river.
The river water have flooded Chumnang, Wairi, Phousupat, Kha Manipur College and Padma Ratna English School.
