Imphal, January 29 2015 :
Intensifying its stir, the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students' Union (IGNTUSU) has halted construction works taking place at IGNTU campus, Makhan and at Adimjati Complex, Chingmeirong with effect from today.
The IGNTUSU has been demanding construction of approach road to the university's main campus at Makhan village.
There is no point of having good infrastructure at the campus when there is no connectivity to the main campus, K Bowang Kho, president of IGNTUSU-RCM said in a statement.
If the State Govt can construct a lengthy road within a few days for the 10-day Sangai Festival, what takes them so long to construct a 3-km long approach road to IGNTU main campus at Makhan, the student body questioned.
Saying that it was unfortunate that some Ministers close to the Chief Minister show no serious intention of taking up the tribal and IGNTU issues earnestly, the statement urged tribal Ministers and MLAs to be serious with the education of tribal students.
The student body also expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the meeting with Dr Rajendran, Registrar of the University who visited the regional campus in connection with the appointment of a full-time Director and other pending issues.
The statement further warned of launching various forms of agitation if the University authority fails to appoint a full-time Director within the time assured by the Registrar.
The Students' Union warned that it would intensify the ongoing agitation in collaboration with other tribal student organisations if the demands for construction of approach road and providing water and electricity to the main campus are not met immediately.
The Union also asked contractors concerned to cease works undertaken within the campus of the university until they are asked to resume the works.
