Imphal, January 29 2013:
All the seven children who were rescued by Thoubal police in the night of January 22 from the hands of suspected child traffickers have been handed over to WK Blah, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Ro-Bhoi district, Meghalaya today by CWC Thoubal Chairperson Mala Lisham.
The children were handed over to officials of their home State at a simple function held at the office of Social Welfare Department.
Apart from officials of Manipur and Meghalaya, family members/parents of the rescued children were also present at the function.
Mala Lisham said that the seven children were rescued by Thoubal police when they were being taken to an unknown place by three adults in a van at about 10 pm of January 22 .
The children were handed over to CWC Thoubal the next day and it was later learnt that the children were being taken to a children home located at Chandel.
Though the particular home has been registered under Societies Registration Act, it was not registered as a children home under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act 2000 .
There was also no document with the Government of Manipur about its recognition of the particular children home.
According to rules, there should be prior communication and exchange of documents when a child is taken to another State between CWCs of his/her home district and the new district to which the child is taken.
However, for the seven children brought from Ri-Bhoi district, there was no prior communication between the concerned CWCs, Mala said.
WK Blah expressed gratitude to Thoubal police, CWC Thoubal and Social Welfare Department of the State for rescuing the children in time and keeping them safely Of the seven children, one has a single parent while another has lost both the parents.
