Imphal, April 28 2016:
Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) has urged the Government to contain the prevailing tense situation before it gets out of hand.
In a statement, the organisation said that the State Government had never dealt drug peddlers and smugglers, rioters and anti-social elements with an iron hand.
Instead of punishing them befittingly according to the law of the land, the political leaders have been defending them for their political gains, the organisation alleged and added that this is the main reason why distrust and discord are escalating among different communities.
The statement said that two youths died and another was severely injured after a mob severely thrashed them at Mayang Imphal recently.
A few weeks later, a youth identified as Sagolsem Prashanta from Kakwa was found hung to death at Lilong Haoreibi on April 26 .
Two persons were severely beaten up by a group of people at Kakwa during the bandh clamped by the JAC constituted against the death of Prashanta last night.
These recent incidents have the potential to ignite communal strifes if the Government fails to resolve it on time, the organisation said.
As such, the Government must spell out the actual circumstances leading to the death of Sagolsem Prashanta after a thorough investigation at the earliest, the organisation said.
It was sensible on the part of the people and organisations of Lilong to decide to extend co-operation to the investigation of the case, MMWO said and added that the organisation would also support the demand for giving befitting punishment to the culprits if the incident turns out to be a murder case.
The organisation would however condemn those responsible persons if the incident turns out to be a meticulous effort to create communal strife.
The organisation observed that there is need to organise awareness campaigns and meetings and check mob gathering at sensitive areas like Kakwa to thwart unwanted incidents.
It further said that the Government must immediately arrest those who spread provocative rumours on social networking sites.
On the other hand, MMWO also demanded the Government to punish the killers of Pitaranjan.
