Imphal, September 27 2022:
An app-based public bicycle sharing system was launched today on the Imphal River bank of Kangla under Imphal Smart City project.
The system was launched by MAHUD Minister Y Khemchand with the objective of promoting cycling, reducing pollution and ensuring better public health.
Altogether 100 GPS-fitted bicycles would be stationed at 20 points within Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) area in the initial phase of the pilot project.
People who wish to use these bicycles should download an app called Yaana and register their names.
People can ride these bicycle within the areas covered by IMC.
If any one crosses the IMC boundary, he/she would receive an alert message and the bicycle would get locked automatically.
Members of Yaana app can ride the bicycles for half an hour for free but non-members would be charged Rs 10 .
Y Khemchand remarked that launching the bicycle sharing system ahead of the Manipur Sangai Festival is quite timely.
He also called upon all concerned to implement the system properly.
He said that the number of bicycles would be raised by another 200 if the people's response to the initial phase is encouraging.
