Imphal, August 25 2011:
The 20th foundation day of Consumer Club, Manipur was observed at Manipur Press Club here today.
Delivering the key note address of the observance, general secretary of Consumer Club, Manipur N Purnachandra Meitei said that protecting the rights of consumers is very much essential in the present situation of Manipur.
But the Govt has never given any encouragement to the Consumer Club nor has ever tried to understand the activities of the Club.
Inspite of that, the Club has been organising workshop and awareness campaign to make the people understand their rights and responsibilities as a consumer.
However, with the increased in population, the Club which is located at Imphal has not been able to look after the grievances of consumers all over the State, Purnachandra said.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, former president of Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Imphal Dr Ch Narendra said that Manipur is essentially a consumer State since all the people depend on products coming from outside and the State does not have its own production.
So, the role of Consumer Club is indispensable in Manipur.
AMWJU president A Mobi observed that most of the people in Manipur do not know their rights, duties and responsibilities.
So, they do not fight for their rights even if essential goods of day to day use like cooking gas and petrol are being deprived and sold in black market at double or triple of its original price.
