Agencies discuss Smart city mission

Imphal, June 25 2016 : Various tasks which are to be executed by Imphal Municipal Cor-poration (IMC), Town Plan- ning Department, Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA) and Municipal Administration Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) towards upgrading Imphal to a smart city were deliberated at length at a programme organised at GM hall today.

The occasion also marked the first anniversary of the launch of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Smart Cities Mission.

Commissioner (MAHUD) RK Dinesh, IMC Mayor Soram Sunil, IMC Deputy Mayor Meibon Phaomei and MAHUD Director and Chief Town Planner N Gitkumar attended the function as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

In his welcome and keynote address, IMC Executive Officer Ng Uttam said that these two missions were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 25, 2015 .

In connection with the Smart City Mission, MAHUD and MUDA in association with Transport Department organized cleanliness competition at parking areas in January 2016 .

Prizes of the competition were distributed in today's function.

RIMS Gate Auto Parking Association, JNIMS Gate Auto Parking Association and Keishampat Bus Bay Association were adjudged first, second and third prizes in the competition.

Rs 20, 000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 were given to the first, second and third prize winners respectively.

In the cleanliness competition of market areas, Tribal Market, New Lambulane (Rs 10,000), Lamlong Bazar Nupi Keithel (Rs 7,000) and Lamphel Super Market (Rs 5,000) bagged 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively.

RK Dinesh said that AMRUT's main objective is to make water available 24/7 at all the urban areas.

Smart City Mission would be implemented in the State in due course, he added.

Dinesh said, "To keep Imphal city clean, let us all keep this objectives in mind".

Chief Town Planner N Geet said that the State and Central Governments would contribute Rs 500 crore each for the Imphal Smart City project.

Widening of roads, installation of prepaid electric metres, commissioning of sewerage project and upgradation of Imphal airport to an international airport are all parts of the Smart City project, he added.

Responding to a query, an official said that the Centre has approved to sanction Rs 51.43 crore to the State for AMRUT.

Of this total fund, Rs 50.15 would be spent in developing water supply schemes while Rs 1.28 would be used in developing Indira Park and BT Park, the official said.

Another official said that a water treatment plant would be constructed at Chingkhei hill to solve shortage of drinking water supply of the State.

The project is likely to be commissioned in 2031, he added.

MAHUD organised the programme in association with IMC, State Town Planning Department and MUDA.
