In yet another instance of duping gullible public by private bank, a lady manager of a private bank has swindled a huge amount of money from the clients on false promise of giving them gold nuggets in return.
After the amount have been collected, 46-year old Pramo Devi of Heingang, who identified herself as the manager of Prabina Lakshmi Financial Agency Pvt Limited also allegedly handed over counterfeit bank cheques to the clients as refund surety of their amount.
Talking to mediapersons in this connection at Manipur Press Club today, the cheated clients, mostly women, demanded action against Pramo.
Mutum Ongbi Prabha Devi of Lalambung, who is one of the clients duped by Pramo, recounted that the amount were collected from them around two months back.
One Aribam Ongbi Nalini Devi of Thongju Part-II collected the amount from the clients on behalf of Pramo, who promised the gullible clients that one Tola of gold would be given to them after two days of submitting an initial deposit of Rs 3000.The remaining amount was to be paid in instalment at the rate of Rs 1000 per month.
Nalini Devi, who had worked as collector under Pramo, disclosed that she collected around Rs 80,000 from different clients and handed over the amount to Pramo.
After Pramo failed to keep her promise, the clients demanded that their amount be refunded.
Consequently, Pramo handed over a bank cheque for Rs 50,000 to Nalini for refunding the amount collected from the clients.
However, it turned out that cheque of Central Bank of India was counterfeit and the account number 0385-2221421 written on the cheque nothing but telephone number.
Some of the duped women clients lodged a complaint at Lamphel Police Station, on which basis Pramo and Nalini have been arrested.
However, Pramo Devi was later released by the police while Nalini Devi was taken out from the police custody by the same petitioners on the ground that she had also been used by Pramo.
After this, the police have not taken up any relevant action against Pramo, the duped clients lamented.
