Imphal, November 23 2014:
As the existing water volume of Singda Dam is much lower as compared to the water volume available in the month of November last year which implies that water may not be available for public consumption by March next year, PHED has decided to supply water from the dam under a rationing system.
The level of water stored in the dam as measured on November 18 was 6 metres lower as compared to the water level measured during the month of November last year, informed a source.
The dam supplies raw water to Kangchup Water Treatment Plant and Singda Water Treatment Plant from where potable water is supplied to Imphal and greater Imphal areas.
The existing volume of water would not last till March next year if water is supplied at the current rate.
This may result in acute water crisis in the first quarter of next year.

Water level of the dam as measured on November 18 last year was 906.45 m but it measured only 900.05 m on the same date this year.
Notably, Indian Meteorology Department reported that rainfall in the State till August this year was lesser by 25 to 30 per cent as compared to the previous year.
PHED's maintenance division has been supplying 16 million litres of water everyday while the project division has been supplying 19 million litres of water on daily basis.
In view of the possible situation of water scarcity, the department has decided to introduce a water rationing system as notified by a statement jointly issued by the Executive Engineers of the department's maintenance division and project construction division.
As such, Uripok, Keishamthong, Games Village, Yaiskul, Sangaiprou, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa and Patsoi would be supplied potable water under a rationing system very soon.
Saying that these measures have been initiated to mitigate the possible situation of water scarcity until the next rainy season, the department also sought public cooperation.
