Imphal, April 23 2022:
Former chairperson of UNLF RK Meghen paid rich tributes to the memorial of Khongjom War heroes at Kheba Ching, Khongjom in Thoubal district, today.
He also offered floral tributes to the statue of Paona Brajabashi at the foothill of Kheba Ching and offered tarpan at Khongjom river.
After offering his tributes to the martyrs of the historic war, RK Meghen said that erstwhile kingdom Kang-leipak had gone through some tribulations in its history including Khongjom War and seven years of devastation.
Saying that the youth of Manipur should comprehend the history of seven years of devastation which took place due to the lack of unity among the princes of the erstwhile kingdom of that time, RK Meghen continued that the Burmese were driven away with the help of the British.
Further stating that the British again waged war against Kangleipak by taking advantage of the same disunity which led to the downfall of the erstwhile kingdom at the hands of Burmese, the UNLF former chairman maintained that "our forefathers fought against the valiant British forces despite all odds.
"We will never forget their valour," Meghen said, referring to the heroes of Khongjom War and appealed to the people of Manipur to learn from the mistakes of the past so that the outsiders couldn't overwhelm Manipur again.
To a query, Meghen maintained that every student should be given the opportunity to learn in their mother tongue till Class X and other languages should never be imposed.
India is considered as the largest democracy in the world and a country as diverse as India imposing Hindi on non speaking States will be ill-suited, he added.
