Imphal, December 21 2011:
Considering the comparatively smaller area of the present Tribal Market which can hardly accommodate the huge number of tribal brethrens, the state government is on the hunt for another Tribal Market site, informed Chief Minister O Ibobi.
Speaking at a function where allotment of stalls to Tribal women at the Tribal Market at New Lambulane was carried out by the directorate of Tribal Affairs and Hills, Manipur today, Chief Minister O Ibobi said process for construction of another Tribal Market at the Adim Jati complex area at Chingmeirong Khongnang Ani Karak has been initiated.
The area is considered most appropriate at present since it is also nearer to the Khuman Lampak Bus Terminus and all the tribals coming from Ukhrul, Senapati and other hill districts will find it more convenient to directly proceed to the market without any problem.
He further explained that the market complex opened quite a long time after it's inauguration due to the delay in giving the finishing touch.
The government is also all set to build a community hall above the A Block of the market.
H Dilipkumar, Director, Tribal Affairs and Hills, said that there are 636 stalls in the market.
Among these stalls, 582 stalls are meant for grocery and other related items while the remaining 54 stalls are for selling fish and meat.
The market is exclusively for women's only.
The allotment of stalls to the people was done through lottery system by the Department of Tribal Affairs.
The Chief Minister distributed license to seven women vendors on the occasion.
The function was also attended by A Luikham, Principal Secretary, Tribal Affairs and Hills, ex-Minister Ngamthang Haokip and Chairmen of Ukhrul, Senapati and Sadar Hills ADCs.
