TKS launches poster campaign

Ukhrul, July 21 2014: As the first phase of campaign in pursuit of their demand for restoring peace and normalcy in Ukhrul district, Tangkhul Students' Union (TKS) launched a poster campaign from today.

Although it was rainy, students came out to streets and participated in the campaign.

Posters that read 'Revoke 144 CrPC', 'Go Back Mani-pur Police Commando and IRB to Imphal' 'Nagas are peace loving people', 'Commando and IRB are not peaceful force', 'Respect Indo-Naga Ceasefire', 'Stop militarization of Ukhrul district', 'Release eight arrested Nagas unconditionally' etc were pasted at different parts of the district headquarters.

The students wore black badges and the vehicles plying in the district put on black flags symbolizing that the State Government has disturbed peaceful atmosphere of the district.

An emergency meeting on July 14 had endorsed UNC to spearhead the future course of action which would spread out to other areas from Ukhrul.

The Tangkhul civil society bodies are said to be awaiting hints/nods from UNC for the further future course of action.

The UNC had submitted memorandum to Government of India demanding revocation of 144 CrPc in Ukhrul town, unconditional release of eight arrested NSCN-IM cadres, return of items seized from WTR office, restoration of WTR to status quo in Ukhrul district, expedite Alternative Arrangement outside the GOM pending Indo-Naga solution etc.

It may be mentioned that the UNC had set a deadline of July 23 to the GOI for fulfilling these demands.

Local MLA Samuel Risom visited Ukhrul yesterday and interacted with the civil society leaders on the prevailing situation.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul Modak Hrishikesh Arvind urged the denizens of Ukhrul not to get panic with the promulgation of 144 CrPC and additional deployment of security forces in Ukhrul town.

Assuring safety to Ukhrulites, he said that he is personally monitoring the situation and had warned the security forces to restrain from resorting to violent activities.

He has directed the security personnel to maintain discipline and avoid harassment to the public which may provoke tension at this crucial situation, the DC said.
