Imphal, June 21 2011:
Some Government colleges have been digging ponds after taking funds from the UGC for constructing swimming pools and these ponds are often presented as swimming pools though they do not fulfil the basic specification of being a swimming pool.
A reliable source informed that some Government colleges took funds from the UGC to the tune of Rs one crore each for constructing swimming pools but in all the cases simple ponds make do for swimming pools.
Some of the colleges which have taken funds from the UGC for constructing swimming pools include Jiribam College, Prabhavati College, Modern College, GP Women's College and DM College.
Generally, these so-called swimming pools are inspected by Manipur University.
However, all the swimming pools are nothing more than simple ponds and they do not fulfil even the basic specifications of being a swimming pool.
The architectural designs of these so-called swimming pools do not include treatment plant (for water) nor bathrooms.
The colleges applied in their own capacity to the UGC for constructing swimming pools and it does not necessarily require Government's permission, said an official of the State Higher Education Directorate.
