Lamka, May 21 2012:
Angry mobs went on the rampage this morning, for a couple of hours moments after news of the death of a seventeen-year-old student who was stabbed last-night spread across the town.
Shaken by the ghastly crime, the Churachandpur District Students' Union asked all shopkeepers to down their shutters at about 10.30 am but this did not pacify the wave of anger that swept the town and a group of incensed mob took to the streets and burnt tyres, taking the public by surprise.
The police however, managed to bring the situation under control after dispersing them.
Jacob Malsawmlien (17) was stabbed at the abdomen at around 8.30 last night by a stranger who had asked him for a cigarette lighter while heading to his friend's residence near Rengkai Cemetry.
Jacob who was reportedly talking on his mobile phone when the incident occurred is quoted by sources as saying that he was stabbed immediately after he responded to the stanger's query in the negative and informed him that he was a non-smoker.
The CDSU, which has given the authorities a three-day period to apprehend the criminal, after negotiating with the Deputy Commissioner said, 'Jacob, brave beyond his years, pulled out the knife from his own abdomen and started chasing his attacker; but could not pursue him for long, as he had started to bleed profusely' .
The attacker is said to have escaped towards the cemetery side under the cover of darkness, after snatching the victim's mobile phone.
Jacob who was rushed to the district hospital was referred to RIMS, Imphal where he succumbed at around 5 am today.
CDSU, in a memorandum to the Chief Minister alleged that Jacob was made to wait for a long time on the excuse that 'the surgeon is not on duty now.' His miseries were further compounded by the callous and indifferent attitude of the doctors and staff on duty, it added.
A resident of Pherzawl in Thanlon sub-division, Jacob along with his siblings rented a house at SA Road in pursuit of higher and better education.
He was a class XII student of Vision Academy.
The CDSU has demanded a monetary compensation of Rs 5 lakh and a Government job for his family.
