Preservation of Kangla's sanctity mooted

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh formally handing over the historic Kangla to the Government of Manipur on this day in 2004 has been celebrated today at Kangla Hall.
The 7th Kangla Day celebration organised by Kangla Fort Board was attended by Kangla Fort Board president Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Board Member MLA L Nandakumar Singh and MLA T Manga Vaiphei, who is also Member of the Board as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
speaking at the occasion, the Chief Minister said handing of Kangla to the people of Manipur by the Prime Minister after prolonged occupation by the british and 17 Assam Rifles will forever remain as a historic day.
Noting sacredness of Kangla O Ibobi desired that trespassing through the Kangla by all concerned with the exception of the Governor, as a means of short-cut, should be prohibited for such transgression would dilute importance of the place.

Conceding that regular budgetary allocation for development of Kangla Fort cannot be gauranteed, he also prevailed upon the Kangla Fort Board to plan income generation activities such as introducing motorised boats in the Kangla Moat to attract tourists.
Reminding that Kangla is a property of the people of Manipur, the CM also stressed on preserving sanctity of Kangla, where various rituals had been performed since time immemorial.
He further confided that State's Art and Culture Department has been entrusted with the task of developing the Palace Compound in order to retain its originality.
In his address, MLA Manga Vaiphei, who is also the Chairman of Manipur Tribal Development Corporation, conveyed that Kangla is a popular destination for the tribal people from the hill areas.
He proclaimed that through development of roads inside the Kangla Fort past inconveniences faced by visitors has been erased.
Taking part in the Kangla anniversary celebration students of Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Government Music College, Imphal presented opening and closing songs.
