Imphal, October 20 2016:
The Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) has threatened to close Imphal-Jiribam highway (NH 37) if the State Government fails to provide security escorts for trucks which are taking stones to the highway for repairing its highly dilapidated sections near Makru bridge.
Chief Minister O Ibobi held a meeting with BRO officials including their Chief Engineer in the former's chamber this evening regarding the dilapidated sections of the highway.
The BRO officials said that they would make the dilapidated sections motorable by December 15 and the State Government agreed to the time frame, conveyed TDC president H Ranjit.
While decrying the State Government's agreement with the BRO's time frame, Ranjit said that they were preparing to take truckloads of stones to the dilapidated sections of the highway tomorrow after calling off the cease work strike following the Government's assurance to repair the same sections but the Government has not made any communication about security arrangements for the trucks which would take stones to the highway.
If the Government fails to provide security escorts, the highway would be closed by parking around 200 trucks loaded with stones across the highway.
Saying that they cannot wait for the BRO's time frame of up to December 15, Ranjit decried that keeping the highway inaccessible to heavy vehicles during the festive season is an insult to all transporters.
