World Bamboo Day

The Wildlife and Habitat Protection Society observed the World Bamboo Day at Punshilok forest of Langol hills.
A bamboo workshop was also held as a part of the observance where volunteers made bamboo baskets and the same baskets were kept at Punshilok as dustbins.
Resource persons spoke on the use of bamboo and its significance.
Different local varieties of bamboos found at Punshilok are Burmese bamboo (Thi-wa), Maribob, Saneibi, Uttang, Khokwa, Unan, golden bamboo (Warangmei), Lomga, Watangkhoi, Moubi-wah, Uyi, Tenwah, Buddha bamboo (Chaphu wa), Thing-khang wa, Lecheiwa etc.
Epu Tarang, a 95-year-old man, who climbed the hill to attend the function blessed the young volunteers and participants for long life with sound environment.
Music from bamboo flute, Pena and poetry recitation were also presented.
Mention may also be made that it is the third time WHAPS had organized World Bamboo Day at Punshilok where bamboos are grown abundantly.
