Imphal, May 18 2016:
The JAC formed against the assault of Tourangbam Tarini Devi has imposed an indefinite bandh along Uripok-Kangchup road from 5 am today demanding punishment against the police personnel involved in the assault of Tarunia pro-ILPS agitator.
Protesters in large number came out amidst the downpour and enforced the bandh from the western end of BT Flyover.
Protesters burned tyres and put up stack of woods on the road.
Pledging that the indefinite bandh will continue, the JAC Against the Brutal Assault of Smt Tourangbam (O) Tarini (Tainy) Devi today said that the indefinite bandh will now extend to the whole of Sagolband Assembly Constituency.
In a statement, the JAC said that Tarini is still continuing with her fast demanding action against the police personnel who assaulted her.
Questioning the silence of the Government over the matter, the JAC said that if no positive response comes by May 20, then it would bar all activities in connection with the IMC polls in Uripok AC.
On the other hand, locals from neighbouring localities joined the protesters today in blocking the road.
Womenfolk also staged sit-ins along the sides of the road.
Speaking to reporters, Mutum Ibemhal, adviser of the JAC said that no action has been taken up so far to punish the police commandos involved in the assault of Tarini Devi even as a memorandum each was submitted to the CM and Dy CM.
The JAC has been launching the agitation to protest the alleged indifferent attitude of the Govt to its demand, she said.
Saying that the assault on Tarini was a challenge to womanhood, Ibemhal said that the matter was also highlighted to the State Commission for Women although no action is coming from the Govt so far.
Tourangbam Tarini Devi sustained a fracture in her left arm after the policemen allegedly beat her up.
She was beaten up by the police when she intervened on seeing the policemen beating a group of young boys on her way home after taking part in a torch rally demanding ILP a few days back.
She is currently kept at JNIMS security ward.
Tarini is continuing her hunger strike at the hospital.
The JAC further warned of boycotting the IMC poll slated for June 2 if its demand is not met at the earliest by the Govt.
