Imphal, September 17 2024:
As observed worldwide, the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Porompat observed the World Patient Safety Day today.
JNIMS Director Longjam Usharani Devi, Medical Superintendent Dr Khumukcham Lokeshwar Singh, doctors, nurses and staff of all Departments attended the observance.
The staff of the hospital took out a march from the OPD Block to the Dental College.
The World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety.
Speaking on the observance and human health, JNIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Kh Lokeshwar said that the leading cause of death worldwide is heart disease followed by cancer and hospital deaths, caused by unsafe care according to the World health Organisation.
According to a 2023 WHO report, around 1 in every 10 patients is harmed in health care and more than 3 million deaths occur annually due to unsafe care.
In low-to-middle income countries, as many as 4 in 100 people die from unsafe care.
Dr Kh Lokeshwar said the World Patient Safety Day this year focuses on "Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety" with the slogan "Get it Right, make it Safe".
A proper and thorough diagnosis is a must for successful treatment of a disease.
A patient must not hide symptoms and illness to a doctor.
Hiding an illness or a condition may compromise diagnosis and treatment.
The diagnosis and safety of the patient are not only the responsibilities of the doctors but also of patient and patient parties, he said.
On deaths due to unsafe care in hospitals, Dr Lokeshwar said making the hospital a safe and hygienic place for patient care may reduce deaths and this requires concerted efforts of the hospital and patient parties.
He said patient parties flooding the hospital beyond permissible number, and practising unhygienic activities including eating inside the hospital premises and littering compromises patient care.
The patient parties and the doctors and nurses must develop a healthy relationship that would enable a thorough diagnosis, best care and treatment, he added.
