'Surveys' expose education mess

Imphal, August 17 2013 : A drive conducted by volunteers of DESAM including its presi-dent Islaudin along with media persons at Moirang Multipur-pose Hr Sec School today has found that the infrastructure of the school and student strength is largely disproportionate.

Meanwhile, Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) inspected Bashikhong Junior High School and Bashikhong High School today.

Moirang Multipurpose Hr Sec School having classes-IX to XII have total student strength of 1107.There are 111 students in class-IX, divided into A and B sections, 91 students in class-X (section A and B), Class-XI Arts has 208 students, Science 357 students and Commerce 37.There are 171 students in class-XII Science, 115 in Arts, and 17 in Commerce.

As the classrooms are poorly maintained and has a capacity of 40 students, the students are literaly compre-ssed in the classroom subse- quently made to endure many inconveniences in attending classes.

Moreover, as the school lacks bench-desk and teachers, the teachers also face many problems.

S Kumar Singh, Principal of the school informed that at present the teacher strength is 14, including regular lecturers and 16 teaching higher class on contract basis.

There are eight graduate teachers for class IX and X, and out of which four are being utilised for higher classes.

At present, the deficient in teachers strength is five each for Physics, History, Geography and Economics, four each for Political Science and Maths, three each for Chemistry and Manipuri, two each for Zoology, Botany and Education, and one for English, the Principal added.

He went on to say that there is only one Laboratory Attendant in the school instead of the required three, with same number of LDC posts lying vacant since 2010.As one post of Librarian is lying vacant the school library is no longer functional.

Education Minister was informed on the problems and had given assurances to redress the issues sooner.

As the maintenance of the school cannot be kept unattended, the repairing work is done with the money collected from students as fee during admission and some money alloted by RAMSA for repairing.

However, the classrooms and infrastructure of the school is outdated, Kumar Singh regretted.

He maintained that there are four toilets in the school but in worst possible condition, due to clogging and stinks.

Moreover, as there is no drain, the school often remains water-logged at the least amount of rainfall.

There was a drain before in the adjacent Patlou Leikai, which was filled up leaving no place for the rainwater to flow and thus causing frequent inundation.

On the otherhand, speaking to media persons at its office at Sega Road Thouda Bhabok Leikai here, secretary publicity of KSA Angouton Khuman said that Bashikhong Junior High School has classes 1 to 8 standards, and with 15 teachers for 84 students.

During the inspection, it was found that students from classes 1 to 6 were taught in a single class room which also doubles up as the school hall, he added.

Khuman continued that a computer out of the three issued by SSA was stolen, and the remaining computers were taken to the house of the Headmistress.

There is neither a choukidar nor a peon of the school.

The construction work of four rooms of the Junior High School was stopped in 2011.There are three cooks in the school but without a kitchen, and so food used to prepared at the house of the cooks and brought to the school.

Bashikhong LP School and Nungyungbi LP School are attached to the Junior High School.

Both the LP Schools having classes 1 to 8 have a total of 15 teachers and 84 students, he said.

He went on to say that Bashikhong High School having classess 9 and 10 has five teachers and 39 students.

Three computers out of 10 of the school have reportedly been lost.

The construction of the School that was stopped should be resumed at the earliest, he demanded and affirmed that KSA will continue to inspect schools, and if any teachers are found to keep school materials at their houses then action will be taken against them.
