Imphal, March 17 2012:
Even as the state government is coming up with new traffic regulations to curb the problem of ever increasing traffic congestion in Imphal, digging up of the road just near the busy Keishampat Traffic Point in the heart of capital city has severely affected the movement of the people to a great extent.
Digging up of the road at the point connecting Keishampat with Waheng Leikai without any prior announcement and that too during the peak traffic hour has created havoc to the people.
It is said that the road is being dug up PWD for lying of a culvert in the area.
According to information received by Hueiyen Lanpao, the earth excavation work is being carried out by PWD under the instruction of the Chief Minister of Manipur.
The reason for excavating the area is to provide drainage system through lying of a culvert which will act as a canal and drain out the water from the eastern part of Waheng Leikai road to Nambul river.
According to passers-by, whatever may be the reason, the excavation process at the road junction, however, does not seem to be the right approach, when hundreds of people from all directions north, south, east and west, need to traverse for their daily work.
Moreover, the public have been caught by surprise as no prior notification had been given in connection with the road excavation.
The problem has been compounded for those caught in the traffic snarl.
It may be recalled here that the Traffic Police and the Transport Department jointly came up with the new Traffic regulations prohibiting entry of vehicles in Paona and Thangal bazaar, thereby resulting in spillover effect of a new dimension of traffic problem along the roads in the surrounding area including Keishampat, Wahengbam Leikai, etc.
Amidst all these traffic congestion faced by the people, digging up of the road near the Keishampat Traffic point made the road chaos brimful.
Reacting to digging up of the road in the middle for lying a culvert, a passerby told Hueiyen Lanpao that without any prior information given to the public, the government's attitude of digging up the road is illogical.
Even if the work taken up by the government is for developmental process, such policy that does not take into account of the sentiment of the people would encourage the people to lose their trust on the government, the passerby added.
