Imphal, June 14 2011:
Councillor of Ward No 13 Nameirakpam Raghumani Singh has been elected, without opposition, as the Chairperson of Imphal Municipal Council, today, which consequently formalised resumption of the Council's activities.
Commenting on the election of Raghumani without contest, MPCC president Gaikhangam opined that non-nomination of a rival candidate, is an indication of the opposition parties endorsing the progressive SPF Government.
ahead of election of the IMC Chairperson, Raghumani and Ward No 5 Councillor Ph Baleswar had submitted nomination papers for the top post, while Thambaljao Phaomei (W/N 25) and A Nimai (W/N 18) had vied for the post of vice chairperson.
Amid hectic politicking and canvassing support of the other councillors, the Chief Minister, MPCC chief and Congress councillors were involved in closed-door meetings for atleast 2-3 occasions ultimately resulting in the election of Raghumani and Thambaljao Phaomei as the leader and deputy leader respectively.
In compliance with the decision and advice of the Congress leaders, Baleswar and Nimai subsequently withdrew from the race this morning.
The election of Raghumani and Thambaljao as the leader and deputy leader respectively without contest was officially declared by the Imphal West district's Deputy Commissioner in the first meeting of the newly elected councillors at the IMC hall this morning.
Speaking at the reception function of the IMC leader and deputy leader at Congress Bhavan later in the day, Gaikhangam applauded the Congress councillors for their strict abidance to the party ethics and principles.
He also expressed that opposition councillors deciding to stay away from the election of the two top posts is an acknowledgement of the SPF Government's commitment and initiative for overall development of the State.
Informing that State Government is taking all relevant steps to accord Corporation status to Imphal Municipal Council, the MPCC chief prevailed upon the councillors that their activities and vision would ultimately be the decisive factor for the upgradation.
In case of conversion to a Corporation coverage of the Council will have to be widened along with addition of some more wards, he advised the councillors to strive for excellence and ensure that Imphal incorporates every ingredient that merits a city.
