Imphal, February 14 2016:
To many parents whose children are differently abled, Ragini Maheikol has become a boon.
It is hard to find schools exclusively meant for differently abled children in the State.
However, ever since Ragini Maheikol was established at Lamdeng Khunou Mamang Leikai in Imphal West district in 2015, many parents are rejoiced that their children who need special care have got an educational institute where they would be trained to face the challenges of life.
School founder Sapam Geeta said that the school has around 30 students.
Of these 30 students, 15 children are staying at the home run by the school, she said.
Geeta further said that the school has five teachers including a Headmistress while the home has two wardens.
She said that her eldest daughter is not only a mentally retarded child but also suffering from ventricular septal defect (VSD) in the heart.
As no school was ready to give admission to her daughter, she was determined to set up a school exclusively meant for differently abled children, Geeta said.
After a prolonged planning and efforts, she realized her dream with the setting up of Ragini Maheikol at Lamdeng Khunou in 2015, Geeta said.
Saying that her school has made the parents of differently abled children realize that their wards can also learn like normal kids, Geeta said that she does not charge anything for giving education in her school and providing boarding facility in the home.
Geeta said that expenditures of the school and home are borne by the donations.
Contending that children from Lamshang, Ukhrul, Churachandpur, Uripok, Lilong, Kairang and Tangkham are staying in the home, Geeta said that mentally retarded and visually challenged children are giving priority for admission to her school and home.
Apart from general education, special classes for vocational training are also conducted, she said and added that the items made by the students are exhibited in different fairs.
Geeta further said that there is also a parents' association of the school.
The members of the association have a joint fix deposit of their contributed money and the interest of the said amount is used in giving salary to the teachers and staff.
Geeta said that she is also planning to establish a college for the children who need special care.
Four teachers including a principal have be appointed for the said purpose, she said.
Geeta said that she took up the endeavour with a determination to uplift the children who need special care.
