Imphal, January 13 2015:
Although a few Government schools located within Andro Assembly Constituency have students beyond their intake capacity, acute infrastructure shortage has plagued these schools.
Unlike many Government high schools located in Imphal and greater Imphal areas, Poiroukhongjin High School is staring at a crisis situation because the number of students is disproportionately high compared to the number of teachers.
According to Mutum Rajendro, Headmaster of the school, there are 744 students in the school at present.
In addition, 200 new students have taken admission forms.
Because of the sheer large number of students, Class I has been divided into three sections while Class V has been bifurcated into two.
All classes below IX and X must have two or more sections but all the students have been sitting together for lack of additional class rooms and other necessary infrastructure.
The school has a total 25 teachers out of whom two were appointed by the school management committee, Rajendro said.
The school was upgraded to the status of a high school from Junior High School last year.
Nevertheless, Classes IX and X were opened at the school since 2013 at the initiative of MLA Th Shyamkumar and Class X students were allowed to appear the HSLC Exam after attaching them to another school.
From this year, students would be appearing HSLC exam in the name of their parent school.
But the school is full of shortages.
Two computer sets were given to the school when it was a Junior High School.
After that no more computer sets were given.
Even though there are two computer sets, there is no instructor.
The existing desks and benches are quite insufficient, Rajendro lamented.
He said that the school has not received any school bags or exercise books which were given under SSA.
On the other hand, Moirangpurel High School has already commenced its academic session but no classes have been conducted because of unavailability of text books.
According to Bimol, the school's care-taker, last year too text books were available three months after commencement of academic session.
Saying that the text books are not available in the markets too, Bimol questioned as to why the Government issued order for commencement of academic sessions when it is unable to make text books available to students.
The school can make remarkable improvements if the Government pays a little extra addition above the investment made by MLA Shyamkumar from his pocket.
Like at Poiroukhongjin High School, there is no computer instructor at Moirangpurel High School.
Students and teachers of these two schools have been considering the option of launching an agitation if the immediate requirements are not addressed by January 20, Bimol said.
