Imphal, September 11 2024:
Unknown miscreants attacked the residence of Good Governance Party (GGP) president Yambem Laba at Uripok Yambem Leikai in the wee hours today at around 3.The miscreants fired nine/ten rounds of bullets at the house of Yambem Leikai.
Some of the bullets hit the wall of the room where Yambem Laba was sleeping.
Notably, the attack came days after he criticised Chief Minister N Biren Singh over the unrest in Manipur persisting for over 16 months.
Speaking to the media at his residence today, Yambem Laba said that his house at Mongjam in Heingang was also attacked on May 27 this year by unknown miscreants apart from destroying his office.
Saying that he went to Delhi on May 26 last to hold a press conference, Yambem Laba maintained that a person dialled him to not hold the press conference.
Yambem Laba said that he had a lodged a complaint with Heingang police station in connection with the attack on his residence at Mongjam in May this year.
Further stating that he criticised the Chief Minister recently by stating "Biren is not Manipur and Manipur is not Biren and people should decide whether to protect Manipur or the seat of the Chief Minister," he said that some people seem to perceive his statement in the wrong sense.
Some masked people wielding guns who identified themselves as village volunteers served a strong warning to all political parties to refrain from criticising the State Government on social media recently after he criticised Biren led Government, he said and added that the name of GGP was also taken while issuing the warning.
GGP doesn't even have a Councillor or a Pradhan let alone MLA, he said adding that GGP is only a political party.
Saying that all street lamps along Uripok road were turned off before his house was attacked, Yambem Laba maintained that he is not sure whether the street lamps were turned off to attack him under cover of darkness or due to other factors.
The miscreants also fired at the CCTv camera of the ATM which is near his house and the identity of the assailants could not be established, he said and maintained that some bullets hit the wall of the room where he was sleeping.
He also said that his sick brother was also at the house at the time of the firing and he may have been disturbed deeply.
Yambam Laba also said that the miscreants who fired at his house might posses curfew pass as the firing took place during curfew hours.
It was cowardice, he said referring to the attack on his house.
Continuing that he doesn't have a grudge against anyone nor associate with any armed outfit, he appealed to all concerned to refrain from attacking him again.
He went to state that those who are displeased with what he had said can contact him through Facebook messenger or other means.
Saying that he has lodged a complaint with Imphal West SP in connection with today's attack, Yambem Laba added that investigation has not been initiated till the afternoon today.
Unknown miscreants attacking a person twice at his residence in just four months is not a joke, he said.
Maintaining that he often speaks on issues which most of the people fear to raise, he said that he is ready to discuss any issue with any person openly if what he says offend them.
Manipur is in a tricky situation and the Government is seemingly confused, Yambem Laba said and added that attacking fellow Meeteis at a time when Kuki militants have even used drones and rockets to attack civilians must be avoided.
Saying that the firing at his place may have been a political attack to assassinate him, he reasoned that innocent civilians may get injured or even die while targeting him.
