Imphal, April 11 2022:
Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights in Manipur and the United Nations (CSCHR) has drafted a petition for submission to the Human Rights Council of the United Nations regarding the various cases of human rights violations that have occurred in the State.
This information was relayed by CSCHR convener Phulindro Konsam during a press conference held today at the head office of Human Rights Alert located at Kwakeithel Thiyam Leikai.
He stated that the new petition touches issues of human rights and justice for the victims of extrajudicial killings among others.
It may be noted that CSCHR had previously submitted petitions to the Human Rights Council in 2011, 2014 and 2017, making this the fourth submission.
In response to these petitions, the UN had directed the Indian Government to repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 from the State, take up appropriate action against those involved in extra judicial killings and bring about a political solution, he stated.
However, the Indian Government at the time refused to repeal AFSPA on the ground that being a border State, Manipur is populated by many who want to secede from the Indian Union, he added.
Stating that Manipur was forcibly merged with India, he expressed hope of restoring Manipur to its former glory.
