Phungzathang pitches for AYUSH society

Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing has urged the Government of India to provide a special grant-in-aid assistance of Rs 40 crore for establishment of a full fledged separate directorate of AYUSH, State AYUSH Mission Society, 50 bedded integrated AYUSH Hospital, drug manufacturing unit of AYUSH and development of alternative system of medicines and tourist health industries in Manipur.
Speaking at the 6th World Ayurveda Congress held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from November 7 to 9, Phungzathang highlighted the richness of Manipur in terms of medicinal plants.
It is very important that due attention is given to develop traditional medicine by bringing in more investment for modern infrastructure, institutions, manpower etc to develop traditional medicines in Manipur.

AYUSH units have been opened in all district hospitals, CHCs and PHCs of Manipur apart from a 10-bedded AYUSH hospital set up at Singjamei.
India's Look East Policy and the proposed trans Asian highway have opened new opportunities for exposing ancient Ayurvedic treatments and medicinal plants to neighbouring countries like Burma and other Asian countries, Phungzathang stated.
Capitalising on the congress, he also sought approval of the Union Health Minister to the State Cabinet's decision for establishment of a medical college at Churachandpur by upgrading a 100 bedded hospital to a 200 bedded hospital.
After listening to Phungzathang's presentation and proposals, the Union Health Minister reportedly assured to look into the matter.
The congress was opened by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan while the closing function was graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan.
In addition to delegates from 40 foreign countries, eight Ministers of different countries attended the congress.
