Rape accused succumbs

Lamka, August 10 2020: A man accused of trying to exploit a mentally unsound girl yesterday has reportedly succumbed to injuries he had suffered in the hands of villagers who pulled him up for allegedly committing the serious offence.

Puabiaklian (36) son of (L) Goihzanang, a resident of Phailian was accused of trying to rape a mentally unsound girl at about 1.30 pm yesterday.

He was later apprehended by the village welfare committee and beaten at the village community hall.

Later that day, he was taken to the district hospital due to the grave injuries he suffered.

Even as the village welfare committee summoned the family to appear before them at 4pm today, the accused reportedly succumbed to his injuries at 2 pm today.

The accused's demise two hours before his family was to appear before the village welfare committee today, has reportedly turned the table as the committee along with the village chief instead appeared before the family to settle the matter on line of tribal customary laws.

It is learnt that the village welfare committee and the deceased's family have reached an understanding after the former have brought a four-legged animal and agreed to pay Rs 3 lakh as compensation.

Following the settlement, the body which was kept at the hospital mortuary was laid to rest at the village cemetery.
