Tamenglong bandh put on hold

Imphal, August 09 2019: The 48 hour Tamenglong district bandh which was planned to begin from August 10 has been put on hold for the "time being" .

Dr Aku, president of Zemei Naga Council (ZNC) informed NNN on Friday that they will not go ahead with the 48-hour Tamenglong district bandh for the "time being" following a "fervent" appeal from the Government of Manipur to give the latter "some time" so that it will "look into the matter".

The bandh was announced a few days ago by the Joint Action Committee on Tamenglong and Jiribam district Boundary Encroachment Issues.

This JAC is being supported by Zeme Naga Council Manipur (ZNCM), Liangmai Naga Council (LNC), Rongmei Naga Council (RNC), Inpui Naga Union, Kuki Chief Association (KCA), Tousem Area Students' organization (TASO), Rongmei Naga Youth Organization (RNYO), Rongmei Naga Students' Organization (RNSO), Zeme Students' Organization (ZSO), Liangmai Naga Katina Ruangdi (LNKR), Thalou Students' Association (TSA) of Tamenglong-Jiri branch, Kuki Students' Organization (KSO) of Tamenglong-Jiri branch, Kuki Inpi of Jiribam and Tamenglong districts, Social Welfare Forum of Jiri-Imphal Road and Liangmai Naga Youth Organization of Tamenglong district.

These organisations are demanding that the Jiri Police Station at Tatbung village in Tamenglong district be immediately removed and be replaced by Tamenglong district police.

They are also demanding that the people who settle or purchase lands from Tousem subdivision of Tamenglong district should pay tax to Tamenglong district administration.

Another demand of these organisations is that, Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) and staff, police and doctors should be stationed at Tousem sub divisional headquarters immediately.

They are also demanding that, the road from Kaipundai to Tousem, from Tamenglong to Tousem via Azuram should be immediately restored.

"We will give the State Government some time as requested, but if it fails to address our grievances within the reasonable period then we will go ahead with our agitation," said Dr Aku.
