Imphal, June 09 2020:
Construction of the 202 Kms long Shangshak-Tengnoupal highway (NH 102-A) began yesterday.
Notably, BRO started constructing the road around 1993 and they abandoned the road without achieving any tangible progress.
Subsequently, the road was brought under the State PWD as a State highway but PWD too failed to develop the road as a standard highway even though development of the road as a standard highway is a long standing demand of the people of Phungyar AC.
NH 102-A would connect with Imphal-Moreh highway at Tengnoupal-Sita junction.
On the other hand, it would connect Shangshak with Finch Corner and then with Imphal-Ukhrul road.
Shangshak-Tengnoupal road is being constructed only after it was declared as NH 102-A by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Due tender process is underway for the 83.5 Kms long Shangshak-Khonglo section of NH 102-A .
For the 40.5 Kms long Khonglo-Kasom Khullen section, the work has been awarded to a contractor with the letter of acceptance.
An agreement has also been signed, sources informed.
But the 10 Kms long Kasom Khullen-Yairipok junction has been already constructed as a part of another project funded by ADB.
Work order and letter of acceptance for the 68 Kms long Yairipok junction to Tengnoupal-Sita junction have been awarded to Rajasthan based M/S Varha.
Construction work of the highway began yesterday in the section was awarded to another contractor.
It is said that a target has been set to complete construction of the particular road section within one year provided there are no undue disturbances.
Phungyar AC MLA K Leishiyo, PWD Additional Chief Engineer T Rabindrakumar and other engineers attended a formal function yesterday which marked the beginning of the road construction work.
Saying that the highway project is one of the key projects taken up at the initiative of Chief Minister N Biren and Works Minister Th Biswajit, Leishiyo conveyed gratitude to the Chief Minister and the Works Minister.
He said that the BJP-led Government has been implementing several development projects within Phungyar AC and Kamjong district and added that a number of water supply schemes would be taken up after identifying the villages which have no access to tap water.
The MLA claimed that a police station would be opened near the Indo-Myanmar border in Kamjong district within the next couple of days.
Chiefs of several villages who attended the function assured that they would extend full cooperation to the work agencies to see that the highway construction work is completed in time.
