Thoubal, January 08 2020:
People should bring their own bags to carry things they buy from the market and they should avoid asking for polythene/plastic bags from shops, said Forest and Environment Minister Shyamkumar today.
Speaking at an awareness programme on environment held at Top-Chingtha Nongpok Ningthou Panthoibi Community Hall, the Minister said that use of plastic/polythene carry bags should be avoided as they pollute the environment and harm soil/fertility.
"To save the environment, we must avoid or minimise using plastics.
We should carry our bags and not ask for carrying bags when we go shopping.
This will reduce plastic use and mitigate environmental degradation," he said.
The non-degradable plastics are harmful to the soil and they inhibit the growth of vegetation, he said informing the impact plastics have on the environment if littered.
