Power dept set for new incarnation

Imphal, January 08 2014: The State's Power Department is all set to transform itself as a corporation from the first week of February even as Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who is in charge of Power Department has issued strong instructions to engineers of the department to strictly monitor the department's dif-ferent programmes.

As decided in a Cabinet meeting last month, necessary procedures were initiated to convert the department into a corporation/company.

The existing employees of the department would be transferred to the company on deputation, informed an official source.

Power distribution and transmission would be handled by two companies.

The company which would be in charge of distribution would be headed by an IAS officer in the capacity of Managing Director while the other company which would take care of transmission would be headed by a senior engineer holding the same post of Managing Director.

Meanwhile, engineers of the department were quizzed by the Chief Minister during a meeting held on January 6.The Chief Minister also issued strong instructions to strictly monitor different programmes being implemented so that they can be completed in time.

It is reported that a programme review meeting would be held on January 22 .
